Physical Education

For all pupils to be involved and engaged in an active curriculum in order to equip them to live a healthy balanced lifestyle and life-long love of participating in sporting activities.

Curriculum Objectives:

The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

 develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

 are physically active for sustained periods of time

 engage in competitive sports and activities

 lead healthy, active lives.

Swimming and water safety at Moira

Curriculum Aims:

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

 swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

 use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

 perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Provision at Moira:

Children in Years 3 and 4 attend swimming. It is distributed across the year with each year group spending a term (approx. 10 weeks, 30min sessions) having lessons. The children are grouped according to experience and ability by qualified swimming instructors.

We also offer those who need additional support with swimming some 'top up' sessions in order to enable them to reach the national expectation for swimming by the end of Year Six.
