Swimming and water safety at Moira
Curriculum Aims:
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Provision at Moira:
Children in Years 3 and 4 attend swimming. It is distributed across the year with each year group spending a term (approx. 10 weeks, 30min sessions) having lessons. The children are grouped according to experience and ability by qualified swimming instructors.
We also offer those who need additional support with swimming some 'top up' sessions in order to enable them to reach the national expectation for swimming by the end of Year Six.
